Reck Lanis was a ranger, born to humble parents in the woodland village of Solath. He was a lonely and isolated child, who prefered to go and play by himself in the nearby woods rather than with other children. In his teens, he dated Wat Emson, but when she ended the relationship to go and study at Tolrath's academy, Reck lost the last thing that was holding him to society. He spent more and more time in the woods outside Solath, losing himself to the draw of the forest. As he honed his ranger training, he became the protector of Solath, defending it from goblin raiding parties and kuo-toa attacks from the nearby Lurking Lair. He a acquired his trusty rapier, Wraith, from the fallen bodies of one of these goblin raiding parties.

Reck was lonely, however, and haunted by the memory of a beautiful, fey-like woman he had once encountered in the forest. A few years after first meeting her, Reck encountered her again, and the two struck up an informal relationship. Reck was learning to love life once more. After a few weeks, however, Reck was attacked by the woman's suitor and a band of fey warriors. The fight led to a small grove, where a cold iron short sword lay forgotten in a tangle of weeds. Reck claimed the weapon for his own, naming it Feysplitter, and striking down his fey foe. Escaping back to Solath, Reck was left with a broken heart and a massive grudge against the feyfolk.

Shortly afterwards, Reck decided he could no longer live so close to the fey-infested Jeweled Wood, and left Solath to take up the life of an adventurer. He joined a party of like-minded beings, and together Reck and his newfound friends made several daring raids and dungeon trawls. After about a year together, the group went their seperate ways. However, Reck and Frogolas - another member of the group - were hired by the Aasimar ruler of Nilija to investigate the scorceror Avaro, who was brewing nefarious plans at Tel'Norra. Although Reck and Frogolas were quickly chased out of the complex by a stone troll guardian, it was there Reck first met what would become some of his closest friends - the dwarf Doifus Trollhead and the elf Ivellios Galanodel, and Orijan Livalisju; who were investigating the fortress on behalf of Goodflock. He also met a future nemesis; the assassin Kalendal, who killed and robbed Frogolas, although Reck was not privy to this event.

A few weeks later, Reck was introduced to Doifus, Ivellios, Orijan, Kalendal and their newest ally, the paladin Eromund, when his Aasimar employer co-opted them all into hunting down Avaro once again. After a tense showdown in the Astral Plane, Avaro was believed destroyed. Reck and his newfound allies decided to stay together and adventure as a party. After several months of on the road adventuring, the team deposed the orc necromancer Kurjan Sawtooth from Brightstone Keep, and took the fortress for their own.

During a visit to the nearby town of Marikest, Reck and his friends were attacked by a band of terrorists, operating under the name Desert Wraiths, who were led by Wat Emson, who had washed out of Tolrath's academy several years earlier. In Marikest, Tolrath himself hired the group to defend his academy from an impending Desert Wraith attack. During the ensuing battle, Reck defeated Wat Emson in combat. Although he was nearly driven to kill her, he held back his urges and instead took her into captivity.
